Delia writes the West as a place of work — early mornings, calving in the cold, the smell of hay and diesel and horse — because the labour is what makes the tenderness land. Her heroes are rugged and capable without being cruel; her heroines are neither helpless nor hardened past feeling. She treats the land and the weather as characters in their own right: a blizzard, a drought, a fence that has to be walked, a herd that has to be moved before the storm. Her one rule about the "claiming" register the genre loves — a man saying mine, the patience of gentling a horse turned on a woman — is that it is always mutual and always chosen: possession is something offered and accepted out loud, never taken. The heat runs high; the consent runs higher.
