She spent her twenties in the back of the string section, being the only Black woman in the room and being extremely good, and she watched what an orchestra actually is: a place where two hundred people agree in advance to submit to one person's judgement for two hours, and where the submission is the whole pleasure. She writes that as romance because she thinks it always was. Asian heroes because the men she played beside for a decade were never once the ones the books were about, and because she is bored of being told which halves of the world are allowed to want each other.
