A Lady Sworn

Her father has told the parish it was an accident. The surgeon on the bench beside her is about to tell the jury it was not.

Suffolk, Candlemas 1814, in the Great Frost. A turned-off tenant is pulled from the ice of the mill-leat, and the coroner sits upon him in the long room of the Bell at Woolpit. Her father, the magistrate, is to be called as a witness and cannot sit in the room. So Miss Letitia Harbord, pretty and ornamental and supposed capable of nothing more, is sent to sit there in his place, beside Mr Matthew Brame, the Bury surgeon who opened the body.

He lays the stones from the dead man's coat before the jury and names it self-murder. Four minutes later she must stand with him in the passage, agreeing about the weather under forty pairs of eyes, and she finds that what she feels is not anger.

In the adjournments they contrive the only privacy an inn in full session allows, in the hired parlour and on the back stair, and become lovers while remaining on opposite sides of the question. Then a chambermaid sees them.

Her ruin and her father's name will fall together. He offers her marriage as a rescue. She means to take the oath instead.

Explicit, open-door Regency romance. For readers of Cecilia Grant and Courtney Milan.
