The Fourth Rehearsal

The kiss was in the script. At the fourth rehearsal it went on half a second longer than directed, and neither of them said a word.

Suffolk, Christmas 1820. Miss Kitty Lorimer is four-and-twenty, lovely, and understood by the whole parish to be marrying Mr Colville of Chevington Hall at Lady Day, though he has never quite asked. Her cousin writes a play for Twelfth Night and casts Kitty as a ward who must be kissed by her guardian. The guardian falls to Mr John Revett of Lincoln's Inn, a grave, ink-stained barrister whose Enclosure Bill cannot pass without Mr Colville's signature.

Every evening they rehearse the kiss in front of a yawning audience. Then her cousin revises the scene to make it longer. One night, with the stage-lamps out and nobody left to perform for, Kitty asks him to show her what the part leaves out.

He says, "Tell me to stop." She does not.

It could cost her a husband, cost him his career, and cost her aunt the family's standing. Kitty means to decide for herself what it is worth.

Explicit, open-door Regency romance. For readers of Cecilia Grant and Tessa Dare.
