Two Floors Apart

Six weeks married, and now they work in the same building. When their families' two firms merge, Hetal Chudasama is given the eleventh floor and her husband is given the ninth, and nobody has said which of them the company answers to. At the announcement the chairman introduces her as Devan's wife first and head of property second—and Devan, who has been letting his father's friends finish his sentences since he was fourteen, says nothing. She is courteous for the rest of the evening, and cold for the rest of the night. She corrects it herself, at the next board meeting, on the record, in front of him—and it costs him a client his grandfather signed. What comes out of the wreck of that is the first honest conversation of their marriage, at eleven at night, with the door shut. Then the numbers arrive, and only one warehouse can survive the merger, and each of them has to make the hard call to their own parent. A real marriage, willingly made, in its first year: nothing pretended, nobody rescued, and two people finding out that being right in front of a board is not the same as being married in front of one.
