Halgren Reach

Halgren Reach is a working salvage-and-transfer station on a treaty boundary, where three species crew the same docks and nobody's law fully applies. It is blue-collar and unglamorous: freight, brine tubs, chalk on case ends, manifest slips, hi-vis and cardigans, emergency lighting and ration bread. No admirals, no chrome. The station is organised by berths, shifts and seals; hull breaches and hard-seal lockdowns are a real hazard; the harbour office rents out non-human hands by the job; and everybody's business travels the dock faster than the official word does.

Halgren Reach is a series of standalone alien romances set on that dock. Every book pairs a human woman with a non-human man from a different species — a different biology, a different set of rules about touch, a different thing he does not know he is allowed to want. He is a competent adult who has read the file on humans and finds it useless the moment she is actually in front of him. The charge is in his carefulness: the pause before he touches her, the visible arithmetic of a man calculating his own strength, and her being the one who closes the gap.

The size difference is the physical language of the line and it is warm, never threatening: he is built wrong for her furniture and entirely right for her. Her body is never the problem to be solved; she arrives already at home in it, and what is new is being looked at like that. The touch-starvation is his, not hers, and the plot of the intimacy is the two of them learning what the other means by contact. Expect open-door heat, explicit and frequent, with the first time slow and talked through. No abduction, no bond that overrides a choice, no biology that decides anything the people have not also decided.

These are comfort books about competence: manifests, rotas, tea made without being asked, and a harbour clerk who has kept the books for thirty-one years and says a berth date out loud exactly where it will do work. Every book stands alone, so start anywhere on the Reach — though most readers begin with Reach for Him and the bar with the bad ceiling.
