The Brindle

She books the room. She pays for it. And the marriage is never in danger.

On the edge of Rendale, Illinois, ninety minutes south of the towns the guests mostly live in, there is a century-old brick hotel with a green awning: floor wax, cut lilies, a bar that keeps going to one, a free breakfast bar in the lobby, and a desk clerk who does not look up. The Brindle is not a destination and not a secret, and that ordinariness is the point. It is where people from ninety minutes away come to do the thing they cannot do at home.

The Brindle is a series of standalone hotwife romances about the established marriages that book it. Each book is a different couple of some years arriving at the same threshold for their own reasons: the pair who have talked about it for a decade only in the dark, the wife who discovers the terms she actually wants are not the ones she wrote down. The room goes in her name and on her card, and she says so. The terms get said in plain sentences, with their boots on, before anyone gets in the elevator. There is a chair by the window, and the husband sits in it, and his wanting is on the page and is never shameful.

The marriage is the love story, and it is never in danger. No cheating, no discovery plot, no jealousy as the engine. The third party is a real person with a life, treated decently, who arrives and leaves and is handled kindly on the way out. The stop-word is an ordinary domestic word that belongs to whoever will have to use it, and saying it stops everything, and nobody is embarrassed, and they all go get breakfast.

The register is grown, plain-spoken Midwestern realism: married adults negotiating appetite in daylight words, dual point of view — the wife and her husband, never the third party — and explicit, open-door heat in which his attention is part of the scene rather than a frame around it. Every book ends with the two of them driving home closer than they left. Most readers begin with Her Name on the Room and Suite 704.

Each book is a complete interconnected standalone with a different couple, a guaranteed HEA. Read in any order.
