Relief postie Jodie Garbutt has spent five years covering other people's rounds and leaving before anyone can miss her. Then a week before Christmas she takes over Thornwick, in the Yorkshire Dales, and on her second morning the drifts shut the lane to the top farms, with the dale's Christmas post still stacked in red sacks.
The only vehicle that can get through belongs to Noel Raistrick of Scarth Top. He is capable, dry and quietly furious about Christmas, because he was born on Christmas Day and has never once had a birthday of his own. Three days in his tractor cab teach Jodie every name on the round. She has started planning Noel the birthday nobody ever gave him when the transfer she has wanted for five years comes through.
Leaving has always been the one thing Jodie is good at. Now she has to decide whether to stay.
