The Last Week of June

She came home with seven sheep and nowhere to put them. Then the village asked her to save the show.

Bryony Thwaite lost the tenancy of Skell Bank, and with it the hill flock she spent eleven years building. She is thirty-three and sleeping under her own school certificates when, nine days before the Thornwick and Upper Wensleydale Show, the marquee contractor goes into administration with the deposit — and every square foot of covered space the show has ever had.

Sefton Ainsley, the show's honorary secretary, wants to cancel. He has watched a village lose its one day of the year, and he knows exactly what a show is legally obliged to be. Bryony wants to run it anyway, out of barns and borrowed hurdles, because she has just had it proved that things which stop do not start again.

Neither can do it without the other. But the last week of June is also the dale's one dry window for silage, and every favour she calls in comes off somebody else's harvest.

A warm, funny, closed-door romance for fans of Heidi Swain and Cathy Bramley. Wellies, rosettes, and a Victoria sponge judged with the gravity of a coroner.
