Quill and Bone

Ansell College is small, old, cold, and has more endowment than students. Quill and Bone is the two-hundred-year-old candidate society that keeps its private papers — which is the society's real power, because it knows what everyone's grandfather did.

The house has one religion: the record. Everything it does goes in the minute book, signed and timed. Everything it holds is meant to be kept forever. And every candidate moves on the same old clock — tapped in the autumn, sworn at midwinter, released or kept at the spring vote — through long legitimate hours alone in a cold strong room, in gloves, under a rule that says every hand on every box is written down.

Which is a great deal of enforced proximity for two people who are not supposed to want anything.

The house is also, as of recently, publicly compromised — caught selling what it swore to keep, and now running an open register it never wanted, an outside audit it was forced to hire, and a quiet, well-bred fury about both. Its own rules keep cornering it, because it wrote them.

Quill and Bone is a series of standalone dark academia romances, each taking one candidate through one year with a new pairing: institutions with teeth, paperwork as foreplay, secrets that are load-bearing, and explicit, open-door heat in rooms where everything is meant to be recorded. Every book ends in an HEA.
