Skarreth Wingwatch

The dragons choose. The rivals have to fly together anyway.

On a cold northern coast, where the Greylag Range comes down to the sea, a fortress is cut into the cliff: half war college, half aerie. Every autumn, candidates from every province and every class arrive at its gate tower for Muster. They climb down the cliff on a rope, fight in the frozen yard, swim the sea cave against the tide, and spend one night on the open Ledge without a fire while the dragons come to look at them. At midwinter, at first light, the unbonded dragons walk the line. Some candidates are chosen. Some are buried. The rest go to the ground services, which are honourable, paid and needed.

Skarreth Wingwatch is a series of standalone dragon-rider romances. Every book is one pair of rivals at the Wingwatch and one part of its year: the trials, the Choosing, the first flights, a season holding the mountain passes. The bond between a rider and a dragon is a partner in the mind and nothing more: no magic powers, no chosen ones. The war over the passes is as old as the kingdom and never ends; what changes is who is flying beside you, and whether you can trust them in a crosswind.

Every candidate is over twenty-one and every one of them is very good at something dangerous. Competence, rivalry, imperious dragons and steamy, open-door heat. Most readers begin with Chosen at First Light.

Each book is a complete interconnected standalone with a different couple, a guaranteed HEA and no cliffhanger. Read in any order.
