Twenty Minutes Unaccounted
Two chaperones. One courtship to watch. Twenty minutes neither of them can account for.
Bury St Edmunds, Fair fortnight, October 1818. Isabella Garrod is twenty-eight, two years a widow, and wearing colour again at last. Her husband chose her gowns and her opinions for six years and never once asked what she wanted. Now she must chaperone her niece's courtship. The young man's family has sent a watcher of its own: his elder brother William, a Cambridge Fellow with chalk on his cuffs, who thinks the whole errand beneath him.
Then the young couple vanish into the Fair crowd, and the two guardians, busy watching each other, have a lapse to hide. Hiding it means contriving to be alone, and soon it means a key turned at the Angel.
She believes the whole risk is hers. She is wrong. A Fellow who marries loses his fellowship, which is his living, his rooms and his work, and William has been doing that sum since the second day.
When the town talks, he offers to rescue her, and she refuses. She does not want to be rescued. She wants to be asked.
Explicit, open-door Regency romance. For readers of Cecilia Grant and Mary Balogh.
